Below are some "bullet points" that I feel DeKalb County government could expand upon to help natural resources as well as human resources.
Citizenship
I heard Lance Armstrong give a live speech about "active citizenship" and how we can all make a difference in our communities. This is something I have always believed in and try to teach my children as well.
Volunteering
There are many ways to volunteer. Whether it is becoming a member of a local PTA or spending time as a Leader for the Girl Scouts, all bring support to organizations that could not exist without such individuals.
Patriotism I believe America is still a great nation filled with many wonderful opportunities. We should not be ashamed of our heritage nor should we try to rewrite our history to make it "politically correct". We are a diverse nation that should be looking ahead with optimism... not pessimism.
GPS I believe that DeKalb County could benefit from the type of GPS tracking technology that I helped integrate into the NIU Huskie Tracks project.
Agriculture Since over 80% of DeKalb County is agriculture it is imperative that we do all we can to promote this industry through financial as well as legislative incentives.
Going Green
I have always supported alternative sources of energy for not only housing resources but also transportation. I think we can all conserve in many small ways, whether it is changing out light bulbs or turning back the thermostat ...
Solar Solar photo voltaic, Solar Water and Passive are 3 ways to harness the suns limitless energy. I believe DeKalb County needs to fully support this technology and give as many tax incentives as possible to further promote this to all of its citizens.
Alternative Construction Who said that all homes have to be square? We need to think "outside the box" and examine the benefits of more energy efficient and tornado proof homes such as domes, earth and other non traditional structures.
GIS The use of Geographic Information Systems such as the NIU campus web map I developed could be utilized at the County level for many different functions to help better manage assets.
Development Economic prosperity is vital for jobs, budgets as well as keeping property taxes down. Light industry, commercial and residential development need to be properly balanced.
